Dharma Friends: Creating Spiritual Community through Art, Music, Meditation, Dharma, and Embodiment Practices.

DHARMA FRIENDS is a monthly community gathering hosted by Megan Mook and Kevin Townely.  Each month features a specific Dharma theme, guided meditation, and rotating special guests. Past themes include the Five Wisdom Families as reflected in art and poetry, and Finding Hope and Optimism During Challenging Times. Join us as we gather together to practice, learn and celebrate embodied creativity.

Theme: The Motivating Four Thoughts

Even the most committed Buddhist practitioners can become a bit lazy. We know the deep value of meditation, study, and coming together in community…and yet, we’re exhausted, work is crazy, and we’d love to faceplant on the sofa with The Golden Girls on in the background. We begin to believe there is a “later” when we can train our minds. Buddhist sages have been wise to this con for thousands of years, and have even devised four helpful thoughts which turn the mind to the dharma.  Join Kevin Townley and special guest Jackie Stewart as they explore these compassionate teachings and related meditations. Jimmy Reed will conclude the evening with a soothing sound meditation led with gongs, bells, and other overtone emitting instruments.

For participants ages 18-35, this event is donation-based via a sponsorship from Dharma Gates. Dharma Gates is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to opening pathways into formal meditation practice for young adults. Working to eliminate conceptual, logistical, and financial barriers to practice, Dharma Gates offers by-donation multi-day retreats, online programs, sangha, and advising. Kevin Townley is a writer, performer, and meditation instructor. His first book, Look, Look, Look, Look, Look Again: Buddhist Wisdom Reflected in 26 Artists, delves into the Five Wisdom Families of Tantric Buddhism through the lens of secular women artists. Kevin’s primary teacher is Kyoun Sokuzan, a Zen priest, who was first authorized to teach by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1978. Kevin teaches regularly in Susan Piver’s Open Heart Project sangha, and has also studied at the Interdependence Project where he completed their teacher training in 2012. In 2022, Kevin guest-curated the Rubin Museum’s Brainwave Series. Kevin is passionate about exploring the interplay between meditation and art, always encouraging others to bring their own innate humor and insight to their meditation practice. KevinTownley.nyc

VISIT WEBSITE

Jimmy Reed is a certified integrative sound and music practitioner based in New York City. With a dedicated interest in the therapeutic properties of sound and meditation, he has been exploring how vibration can impact people on both mental and physical levels. Working with a range of overtone emitting instruments, focused breathwork, and engaging the senses, he encourages a state of balance and ease through deep listening and embodied awareness. It is from this calm yet alert state that our minds are free to think intentionally and creatively. Having studied under ethnomusicologist and composer, Alexandre Tannous (Columbia University), his approach is based on the intersection of art, science, and well-being.
