Tibet House Movie Nights is pleased to present Geshe Wangyal. With Blessing of the Three Jewels: a dramatic story about the incredible earthly and spiritual journey of a Buddhist monk from Russia who became one of the first Tibetan Buddhist teachers in the United States. Ngawang Wangyal, aka Sogpo Wangyal, popularly known as Geshe Wangyal and “America’s first lama,” was a Buddhist lama and scholar of Kalmyk origin. He was born in the Astrakhan province in southeast Russia sometime in 1901 and as a young man, he left his home and spent over 30 years in Tibet and India, attaining the Buddhist degree of Geshe. He was a friend of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and taught at Columbia University in New York City, dedicating his life to putting the Buddha’s teachings into practice, and trained many talented students, increasing interest in Buddhism in the West.
